- Still living in Auckland, no immediate plans to move.
- Working as a DevOps engineer at
$WORKPLACE(I’m sure you can find where exactly I work with a little digging, but let’s keep that separate from here, why don’t we?). - I’ve started attending more regular in-person meetup groups this year, including a Japanese conversation exchange group (Meetup link here) and one formed from a meetup for a blog that I sometimes read. They have both been a great time and I have met great people through each of them, would certainly recommend going out and doing things IRL.
- I visited Okinawa, Hong Kong and (mainland) China in April / May this year. It was my first time visiting mainland China and it still managed to surprise me quite a bit despite having been to Hong Kong and Taiwan before.
- I’ve been keeping up with Beeminder, mostly to keep up with this blog and my private journalling. I’m still thinking up more clever ways to use it to reinforce good habits, though being careful not to overload myself.
- Speaking of this blog, I have my own domain now! Still need to actually put down all my vague ideas for what to do on here though.
- I’m still trying to get my head around AI, though recently I’ve found playing around with open-weight models like Gemma and Kimi much more interesting and pleasing than trying to keep up with the frontier labs’ hype. I’ve still got my Claude subscription active, but I think (or at least hope) that the future involves highly capable models that can run totally on consumer hardware.
- I’ve been trying to cast a wider net for things to read online and to move away from my bad habit of obsessively refreshing the same few blogs and sites over and over. Specifically, I’m looking for more ’timeless’ articles, pieces that will still be meaningful in 5 or 10 years. Asterisk magazine has plenty of these sorts of articles, enough to convince me to recently get my first ever print subscription to a magazine.
